How Publishing is Surviving the Digital Age

At SIIA‘s (Software & Information Industry Association) June 20th Platforms Publishing Technology Showcase, we learned about the latest trends and tools being used by todays leading publishing companies.

A various speakers presented case studies and solutions offered by companies including:

TEMIS gave a very simple and concise presentation on symantec content enrichment – demonstrating how TEMIS can index data, identifying Triples (subject, object, predicate) and creating intelligent associations giving the reader access to content relevant to their needs and interest.

Bryan House of Acquia explained how open source (Drupal) and the cloud are being used in such media giants as Warner to quickly publish artist sites complete with eCommerce and social media capabilities.

Take Away:
The conference was good opportunity to learn about what the publishing industry is doing to stay competitive in an all-digital economy. As a UXer, I was more interested in the latest trends in user interfaces and data visualizations. I was happy to hear Bryan reference the adoption of Lean Start-up in Acquia’s delivery approach. Clearly the publishing industry is aware of the shift to digital and is rethinking how it delivers content to their customers. The solid landscape of the publishing world has now become very fluid.. more like a torrent. We’ll see how well they adapt to the new way of doing business.
